How this estimate works
One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof coverage. The calculator multiplies roof area by the number of existing shingle layers, then applies the shingle weight you enter.
The default shingle weight is 230 pounds per roofing square. U.S. EPA used 230 lb/square as the midpoint of a published 210–250 lb/square range when estimating asphalt-shingle generation. For volume, this calculator uses 731 lb per cubic yard for composition roofing, based on CalRecycle's Targeted Statewide Waste Characterization Study.
