What is a roofing square?
A roofing square is a standard roofing measurement equal to 100 sq ft of roof surface area. It is a unit of coverage, not a measurement of the home's floor area.

Planning weight per square
EPA's construction-and-demolition debris methodology cites a published range of 210–250 pounds per square of roofing coverage and uses 230 pounds per square as a midpoint planning value.
Actual asphalt shingle weight varies by product. If you know the exact shingle product, use the manufacturer's product weight when available.
Example: 20 squares, one layer
2,000 sq ft ÷ 100 = 20 roofing squares
20 × 230 lb = 4,600 lb
4,600 lb ÷ 2,000 = 2.3 tons
What if the roof has two layers?
20 squares × 2 layers = 40 squares removed
40 × 230 lb = 9,200 lb
9,200 lb ÷ 2,000 = 4.6 tons
How many bundles are in a roofing square?
For many standard asphalt shingles, manufacturers commonly package about three bundles per roofing square. GAF notes that most standard 3-tab and architectural asphalt shingles use three bundles per square, though bundle count varies by product.
Why actual tear-off weight can differ
- Shingle product: different products can have different weights.
- Number of layers: two layers can roughly double shingle weight.
- Moisture: wet roofing debris can weigh more.
- Attached materials: underlayment, flashing, nails, decking and other materials add weight.
Weight matters more than dumpster volume
Roofing shingles are dense. A dumpster can reach its allowed tonnage before it is physically full, so container counts should be treated as volume equivalents rather than guaranteed recommendations.
